managing two ipods independantly ...

Hi
I have an ipod and an iphone. The ipod has around 10,000 songs on it. I would like to put music on the iphone but with a different bit rate. That isn't a problem, however when I want to update the ipod how can I have it ignore the songs that I want on the iphone. Is there a way to de-select songs in groups of hundreds (or more) or do I have to click on each one to de-select? Can I make master play-lists that have other play-lists inside of them? (Like folders
