Unable to rip music from CD's. Audio CD ...

I have installed, uninstalled and reinstalled iTunes. Since my first install, the CD/DVD drive is not recognizing audio cd's or blank cd's.
I am getting the warning message (which I have seen on several posts) "The registry settings used by the iTunes drivers for importing and burning CDs and DVDs are missing. This can happen as a result of installing other CD burning software. Please reinstall iTunes"
I have gone through all the steps for troubleshooting CD issues caused by device filters.
There are no LowerFilter or UppperFilter keys to delete, so I am not able to continue that process.
This is very puzzling because I can play a dvd.
At this point, I am unable to rip music from my own cd collection nor am I able to listen to any music cd's. I have been using Windows Media Player for ripping music and syncing with my previous MP3 player before I received my iPod.
Any help would be appreciated. I'm at a total loss.
