I'm sure the answer to this exists, but I haven't been able to find it. Thanks in advance to anyone who can point me to the right place...

My daughter's laptop recently died a horrible death -- including the external backup drive (it's a long story). She has a new/replacement laptop.
The only iTunes library backup she had was to that external drive (nothing to a DVD or CDs). So all of her music collection from over the years, including stuff that pre-dates her iPod, and her pictures and videos is on her iPod, and on her iPod only.
We are "deathly afraid" to connect her iPod to her new PC (and newly installed iTunes software) for fear of losing everything that currently exists only on her iPod (we've heard the horror stories).
I am confident we aren't the first people to encounter this problem and there must be away to synch the existing, content-rich iPod with the new, barren laptop/iTunes library.
As I said, any pointers to the right article greatly appreciated.
